Blindness:
Definition, Causes & More

In the world of blindness, people 'see' things differently

When we talk about blindness, more often than not, I would think we are simply talking about not being able to see at all.

I mean, that's probably what most people mean, don't you think?

Well, apparently, it's not that simple...there's more to it than meets the eye ;)

First of all, there's the legal version of it. Yes, I do mean what the law says it should be. Read more

For simplicity's sake, whenever we talk about this eye problem here, let's just assume we mean "totally can't see", alright? :)

Causes of Blindness
There are various causes to this eye condition, the most common being eye diseases and malnutrition. The top 3 diseases that cause this include:

Sometimes, abnormalities like optic nerve hypoplasia, or even something like eye injuries, can lead to such vision loss.

Genetic causes such as albinism, has also been identified to lead to low vision and vision loss.

Overcoming the Obstacles

While one may not necessarily acquire the powers of the DareDevil, there are tools and aid available to help make life easier.

For starters, those who are visually impaired can carry a white cane, which is recognized internationally as the symbol for blindness.

Alternatively, those visually handicapped people who are already competent travellers, can use the help of guide dogs. These dogs are specially trained and highly intelligent to guide them around obstacles in the way.

For reading purposes, they can read Braille, or use text-to-speech software on computers.

Moving on, looking ahead
Although life might be more difficult without the sense of sight, I believe the blind can still live their lives to the fullest and make miracles happen.

Maybe understanding the likes of what Andrea Bocelli, Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder have been through would put things in another perspective :)
