An Ophthalmologist, Optometrist,
or just an Optician?

So you're looking for an eye doctor? Which type are you looking for?

Before we go any further, I guess now's a good time to get some terms sorted out, don't you think? :)

Initially, I got kinda mixed up by the op-this and op-that.

So I've decided to find out what the specific terms are, and differentiate them once and for all!

Let's have a look:

The Ophthalmologist
An ophthalmologist is a physician specialist expert in the treatment of diseases of the eyeball and retina. He/she is a doctor of Medicine (M.D.) Find an ophthalmologist here.

The Optometrist
An optometrist is professionally trained and licensed to examine the eyes for visual defects, diagnose problems or impairments, and prescribe corrective lenses or provide other types of treatment. He/she is a doctor of Optometry (O.D.) Find an optometrist here.

The Optician
An optician is one who reads prescriptions for visual correction, orders lenses, and dispenses eyeglasses and contact lenses.
